We just welcomed 30 new ladies to the herd! With our recent purchase of the neighboring parcel of land we now have the opportunity to expand our cattle operation. We now have 140 acres. Initially, we expected to wait until spring to purchase additional animals given that we have a new baby and just moved into a new home. However, after pricing cattle out it was clear that we were better off financially to purchase bred cows right away.
Right now, our long term goal is a herd of moderator red Angus cattle. Given the short time frame in which the purchase of our additional property took place and the need to immediately focus on generating farm revenue, we took advantage of the opportunity to purchase 30 mid-sized blank Angus bred cows. These cows are selected for their smaller frame size making their calves better suited for finishing on grass. The cows range in age from 3 to 6 and should begin calving in the next few weeks. We still have three moderator red Angus cows bred to a red Angus bull. If any of these cows have heifer calves we still plan to retain them as replacements and slowly build our ideal herd. In the meantime, these new ladies fit the bill.
Lets hope for a nice smooth calving season!
